“Purim Prism between Appearance and Reality. Transformation and Revelation as Artistic Practice”
Panel discussion | Live Performance | Purim party
March 2, 2026 | Dresden
Curated by Daniel Laufer
Purim—the Jewish festival of self-affirmation and liberation—celebrates the transformative power of masquerade and revelation. Drawing on this tradition, the evening explores the interplay between concealment and revelation, between self-presentation and self-denial. Here, Purim becomes a prism for examining the interplay of masquerade, reflection, and contradictory realities in the present
The event combines a showcase, panel discussion, and live performance with a Purim party in the synagogue. Dagesh artists present works from literature, painting, photography, film, and performance that explore central Purim themes: How do masks become protection or self-revelation? When does disguise offer liberation, and when does it become disguise?
The artistic positions connect artistic practice, literary perspectives, and performative and cinematic image politics. They open a space for reflection on fundamental questions: When do we hide behind roles, and when do we consciously employ them? How do societal expectations shape our identity? Where is the line between conformity and self-abandonment—and when does removing the mask become a necessity?
Purim thus becomes the starting point for a universal exploration of identity as a dynamic process between external perception and self-determination. The evening is aimed at anyone interested in contemporary art, questions of identity, and the handling of societal roles.
