Nittelnacht at Hillel DEUTSCHLAND | 24th of December 2022

Come and join Hillel Deutschland and ELES so we can put our own spin on the Ashkenaz tradition of Nittlenacht. Maybe you are not familiar with Nittlenacht and might ask: What is Nittlenacht? We are glad you asked! The anti-holiday was invented in Eastern Europe and was held on Christmas eve. It was customary for Eastern European Jews to refrain from Jewish learning and instead play games and stay inside. Staying inside on Christmas Eve amid rowdy anti-Semites who believed Jews were responsible for killing Christ would seem a reasonable response to terror. Today this gladly isn’t the reality of most of us, but Christmas eve can still feel lonely for many Jews.

ELES and Hillel invites you all to join us on December 24th for a cosy and relaxed Pyjama Party with lots of games and snacks. We will start with Havdalah and light the Channukiah together. But in the spirit of Nittlenacht we also don’t want to forget that other people are not as fortunate as we are. Therefore we will lead an activity in solidarity with the Ukrainian people that are afraid of their livelihood being more or less constrained to their homes with no electricity.
